Dentures

Our Clients are Our Priority, We Offer Quality Dental Services of Specialists

Dentures are consists as a removable replacement of missing teeth and surrounding tissues. There are two types of dentures:

  • Complete dentures – when all the teeth are missing
  • Partial denture – when some natural teeth remain.

Complete Dentures

Complete dentures can be made either ‘ conventional’ or ‘ Immediate’ dentures. Conventional dentures are usually placed in the mouth 8-10 weeks post extract of the teeth. Unlike conventional dentures, Immediate dentures are made in advance and placed in the mouth immediately after extraction. Hence the wearer does not have to be teeth- free during the healing period.

Partial Dentures

Partial dentures consist of replacement teeth and gum- coloured base which is supported by a metal framework that holds the denture in the mouth. A partial denture replaces the missing teeth and also prevents the change of position of other neighbouring teeth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there any  alternative to dentures?

Dental implants are definitely the ideal alternative to dentures as they very closely resemble the feel of natural teeth.

Will dentures make me look different?

Dentures are fabricated to resemble the natural teeth and even improve your general smile and facial appearance.

Are dentures worn 24 hours a day?

Initially the dentures are worn for a long period of time , so we can identify the areas on the dentures that need adjustment. Once the adjustments are made , you can remove your dentures at night time. This allows your gum tissues to rest and your dentures can be inserted in your mouth the next morning.

Should I use denture adhesive?

Denture adhesive increases retention, stability and the wearer’s sense of security with the new denture. It is useful for people suffering with dry mouth , taking long term medications, neurological disabilities and the elderly. Denture adhesives are also useful for people with unusual demands on facial muscles – for example: public speakers and musicians.

What do dentures feel like?

New dentures can feel loose for the first few weeks until the muscles in your mouth adapt to keep the denture in place. The patient should also feel comfortable inserting and removing the dentures at ease. It also common to have mild irritation during the initial few weeks but these problems will soon fade away as the patient gets adapted to the new denture.

Will eating with new dentures be difficult?

It is always advisable to start with soft foods with new dentures until the wearer feels comfortable. It is advised to chew slowly using both sides of the mouth. As you get used to your denture, you can start your normal diet. Make sure to be cautious with hot, hard, sticky or food containing sharp- edged bones or shells.

Will dentures change how I speak?

Initially there may be difficulty pronouncing certain words but by regular practice you can slowly get used to your new dentures.

Orthodontics

Our Clients are Our Priority, We Offer Quality Dental Services of Specialists

Orthodontics is a branch of dentistry that is used to diagnose and correct malpositioned teeth and jaws and treat misaligned bite problems. Abnormal alignment of jaws and teeth are common.

Types of orthodontic treatments available.

Fixed Vs Removable Appliance

Depending on the severity of the situation, your orthodontist would advise you a fixed or a removable appliance.

Fixed appliance – Braces: You must have heard the term ‘ braces’ – which is a commonly used fixed appliance consisting of bands, wires and brackets.

How do braces work?

Brackets are placed on the front side of your teeth. Bands ( anchors) are placed around your tooth. Wires (arch) connect the brackets to the bands. By tightening the arch wires , it puts pressure on your teeth and thereby allowing your teeth to slowly move into position. Braces are usually adjusted every month and typically worn from a few months to few years.

Fixed space maintainers –  Sometimes young children might lose their teeth too early . Hence an orthodontist might place a space maintainer in your child’s mouth to keep the space open for the eruption of the permanent teeth.

Self ligating braces – Self ligating braces are very similar to conventional braces with one notable exception ie: the ligatures. There are no rubber bands, elastics or metal ties around your teeth as they are not needed for the appliances effectiveness. This design uses special clips on the brackets that helps the archwire move your teeth into place. These clips allow greater freedom of movement thus reducing the discomfort brought by conventional ligature wires. Self ligating braces are much easier on your teeth and can reduce the amount of pressure and friction for the patients who wear them. Another major advantage is that as a patient you could spend less time at the clinic and we could even space out your visits.

These kind of removable appliance are increasingly becoming popular- especially among young adults than the traditional braces. Aligners move teeth exactly the same way some braces do but they are completely invisible and do not involve any wire or brackets.

Removable space maintainers – These work exactly the same manner as the fixed space maintainers. The space maintainers are made up of plastic or wire branches and an acrylic base that fits in the jaw.

Jaw repositioning appliances – These appliances are commonly referred to as splints and are placed in the top or lower jaws and commonly used to treat TMJ disorders.

Lip and cheek bumpers –  Lip and cheek muscles might exert pressure on your teeth, in such cases it is advised to use bumpers for lips and cheeks.

Palatal expander – This is a plastic plate device that is fitted in the roof of the mouth and is used when the upper jaw needs to be widened.

Removable retainers – These devices are worn on the roof of the mouth and prevents the teeth shifting back to its original position.

How do I know if I need orthodontic treatment?

We provide a complete orthodontic assessment when you visit us. With the help of your teeth models and xrays we can provide a treatment plan that works for you and your teeth.

Common problems that require orthodontic treatment include:

Overbite : the upper front teeth tend to protrude over the lower teeth.

Cross bite : the upper teeth is placed behind the lower teeth

Open bite : some people have a straight gap between the front lower and the upper teeth when biting down

Misplaced midline: the middle of your upper and lower front teeth don’t line up.

Spacing: sometimes there appears random gaps or spacing between your upper and lower front teeth

Crowding: the upper and lower ridge in your mouth is not able to accommodate your teeth

There is a lot to consider while looking at a suitable orthodontic treatment plan. By understanding the problem and the solution, you can experience the benefits for yourself.

Some procedures involved in preventive dentistry:

Prevention of gum disease: A simple, less invasive routine professional cleaning procedure removes plaque deposits and maintains healthy teeth and gums. It is recommended to get a professional cleaning done every 6 months.

Prevention of teeth crowding:

Serial extraction– Specific deciduous are extracted to allow the erupting permanent teeth into position. This procedure is usually recommended around 8-9 years and prevents the possibility of future crowding.

Space maintainers– To allow the space for permanent teeth, space maintainers ( custom- made appliance) are fabricated for erupting permanent teeth. Frequently Asked Questions

Is a Pediatric Dentist necessary?

If your child is suffering from serious dental problems….it is always advised to seek help and treatment from a dentist trained in treating young patients. While most problems can be treated by general dentists- some advanced or complex issues require specialised care and treatment.

How do I prepare my child for the first dental visit??
  • By staying positive… Parents can sometimes transfer their fear or dental anxiety to their children.
  • Use positive reinforcement
  • Reading books or watching videos on dental visits
  • Playing games and they can always bring their favourite toys or books while visiting us…
If my child gets a toothache- what should I do??

To comfort your child , rinse your child’s mouth with warm salt water and apply cold compress or ice wrapped in a cloth on your child’s face – if it is swollen. Do not put heat on the sore area and consult your dentist immediately.

What should I do if my child knocks out a permanent tooth?

Firstly, remain calm. If you are able to find the tooth – hold the tooth by the crown and not by the root. Replace the tooth in the socket and hold it in place with a clean gauze or washcloth. If you can’t put the tooth back in the socket, place the tooth in a clean container with milk and take your child and the container immediately to the dentist. There always better chance of saving the tooth when we are able to respond quickly.

What is baby bottle tooth decay and how can I prevent it??

Baby bottle tooth decay otherwise known as Nursing bottle caries occurs as a result of prolonged nursing when the child goes to sleep while breast- feeding and/or bottle feeding.

While the child is sleeping the saliva flow is reduced and this diminishes the natural cleansing of the mouth. Avoid nursing children to sleep and avoid anything but water in their bottle

Encourage your child to drink from their cup as they approach their first birthday and make sure they are weaned from the bottle at 12-14months of age.

When should my child start using toothpaste??

Do not use fluoridated toothpaste until the age of 3 and make sure to brush your child’s teeth with water and soft bristled toothbrush. After 3 years … supervise their brushing and do not use more than a pea -sized amount of toothpaste.
